In the last three decades, Stoll Berne has recovered hundreds of millions of dollars on behalf of thousands of investors in individual cases and class actions. Stoll Berne has represented more investors in securities and stockbroker fraud cases than any other firm in Oregon, and we regularly try securities cases in state and federal courts and in arbitration. We are one of the small number of law firms who have tried securities class action cases.
We routinely represent investors in cases against national brokerage firms and individual brokers before the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA, formerly the NASD). We also represent investors in state and federal court against corporations and institutions that commit securities fraud. For instance, we recovered $43.5 million for investors in a nationwide securities fraud class action, including $13.5 million from defendant's auditor, KMPG, which is one of the largest recoveries against an accounting firm in Oregon history. Stoll Berne has a long history of helping large institutional investors, such as state pension funds, college savings plans and private pension funds, recover losses due to securities fraud. We represent institutional investors in both class action litigation and individual "opt out" cases where the institution is better served fighting for its own interests. Together with the Oregon Attorney General and Department of Justice, we represented the Oregon College Savings Plan in securing a settlement of over $20 million for college-bound children in a securities case against OppenheimerFunds. Brokers, Broker-Dealers and Investment Advisors
We represent a number of select national, regional and local securities broker-dealers and brokers in disputes with customers, with other broker-dealers and before regulators.
For example, we have represented a national broker-dealer in defending contract and intentional interference claims by a broker who was seeking $18 million in damages. The ultimate award against our client was less than $50,000.
In another case, we obtained a favorable settlement at minimal cost to our broker-dealer client in defending securities fraud claims by investors who were seeking in excess of $20 million.
Recognition and Awards
Our attorneys are recognized by both peers and clients, and consistently rank in Chambers USA, Best Lawyers and Oregon Super Lawyers lists.
"The court worked specifically with counsel, of whom I have the highest respect for each and everyone." "These people have produced a remarkable result for the shareholders. They have done so at an enormous saving of court time, one of the earliest recoveries bringing to closure unliquidated claims."
-US District Court Judge Robert E. Jones
