Robert Shlachter Receives 21st Annual Owen M. Panner Professionalism Award

Robert Shlachter has been chosen as the recipient of the 21st Annual Owen M. Panner Professionalism Award by the Oregon State Bar’s Litigation Section.

The annual award is named after Owen M. Panner, an esteemed member of the federal bench, and each year honors one member of either the bench or bar who exemplifies the highest personal and professional standards. The award recognizes both personal and professional qualities, reputation, and conduct.

Shlachter is a trial lawyer who handles cases in state and federal courts, as well as before arbitration panels, emphasizing all types of complex business litigation. He concentrates his practice on intellectual property, unfair competition and commercial litigation. He is the former president of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers and frequently lectures and writes about strategies in commercial litigation.

Since 1996, he, along with his wife Mara and others, has spent a significant amount of time as a volunteer coach in the high school mock trial competitions where his team won the state championship in 2001, 2002, and 2003 and was runner-up in 2008. For ten years, he has also been a volunteer mediator with the Multnomah County Court Mediation Program, and Shlachter has held board positions with Hillel International, Portland Hillel, Jewish Federation of Portland, and the Mittleman Jewish Community Center.

In 2012, Shlachter and his wife received the Sussman Award for outstanding contributions to the community. He was also named as a top 10 litigator in Oregon by The National Law Journal and has been ranked in Oregon Super Lawyers (since 2006), Chambers USA (since 2005), Best Lawyers in America (since 2007), and Benchmark Litigation (since 2008). Additionally, he was listed as Lawyer of the Year by Best Lawyers in America for Bet-the-Company Litigation in 2012 and 2017, Intellectual Property Litigation in 2014, and Patent Litigation in 2015. Shlachter was inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers in 2009.

Stoll Berne’s managing shareholder, Keith Ketterling, noted that “Rob’s compassion and integrity are matched only by his humility. Despite his many accomplishments and accolades (of which he should be proud), he is more often self-effacing than self-promoting. Rob has taught us all discipline and compassion and to be generous with each other as partners as individual gains are worthless if those you care for don’t also gain.”

The award will be presented at the 25th Annual Litigation Institute & Retreat on March 16, 2018 at Skamania Lodge in Stevenson, Wash. To learn more about the event, click here, for a list of past recipients, click here, and to learn more about Shlachter, click here.
